So, did you watch the Oscars? If you didn’t, find out all the glittery (and mostly predictable) details here.
If you did, what did you think? A few hightlights: I was glad to see Hurt Locker take the night’s top prize, and especially glad to see a breathless Kathryn Bigelow win best director. (The first woman ever to do so, by the way. What took so long?) Though Meryl Streep was so justly deserving of the award, Sandra Bullock’s acceptance speech for best leading actress was both funny and touching, and who doesn’t love a wacky Jeff Bridges paying a thoughtful tribute to Mom and Dad after winning best leading actor? I would have loved to see Maggie Gyllenhaal take best supporting actress for her turn opposite Bridges in “Crazy Heart,” one of a handful of performances she’s given that deserve critical acclaim. But the night belonged to Mo’Nique of “Precious,” as it did Christoph Waltz, who took best supporting actor for “Inglourious Basterds.”
A few interesting tidbits:
- Did you notice Farrah Fawcett’s absence from the traditional In Memorium tribute? It seems many people did.
- Others discussed the presence of a particularly glum George Clooney sitting in the front row.
- And how about the documentary producer who pulled a Kanye?
