Open your eyes to ‘Half the Sky’

March 3rd, 2010 at Wed, 3rd, 2010 at 6:02 am by Jennifer Morris

Tomorrow night brings a nationwide showing of “Half the Sky,” a celluloid event inspired by stories from a book of the same name, written by two Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists, Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. The show begins at the Bainbridge Cinemas, along with 480 other select movie theaters around the country, at 7:30 p.m. March 4.
The event comes from poverty-fighting organization CARE and NCM Fathom, a pair holding the showing as its second annual International Women’s Day event. It is a one-night presentation, and it includes musical performances, celebrity discussion and the world premiere of “Woinshet.” Directed by Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei and Lisa Leone, “Woinshet” chronicles the struggles of an Ethiopian woman who triumphs over violence and discrimination. Event panelists and performers also include India.Arie, Diane Birch, Michael Franti and Sarah Ferguson.
Below is a video on the book, and another on the film event.
Tickets are available at the Bainbridge Cinemas box office or at will call by calling Emily at (206) 930-3383. Tickets are $12.50. Visit www.halftheskylive.com for more information.
